Hobbit Movie Update: Splitting the story and casting the burglar

MTV recently got Guillermo del Toro to spill a couple of more Hobbit details and /Film has a good summary of them. The biggest reveal (if you can call it that) is that the two films will split the story in the "one," "logical" place and that - according to del Toro - "everybody knows" what it is.

I'm not so sure I know, but it's been a while since I've read the book. /Film is confident that it's the barrel escape from Mirkwood and I suppose that makes sense. Del Toro says that the break is logical because the two movies are telling the story of "the relationship between Bilbo and Thorin and all the dwarves." Bilbo's rescuing them from Mirkwood is certainly a turning point in that relationship, but so are his rescuing them from the giant spiders and his conversation with Smaug.

Del Toro also says that he's picked his Bilbo, but they won't be ready to announce for another few weeks yet. /Film likes Ewan McGregor for the part, but most of the commenters are guessing it's James McAvoy. My money's with the commenters on this one.

What do you think? Where are they going to split the story and who's playing Bilbo?
