Wonder Woman has a boyyyyfriend

So, in the latest issue of Wonder Woman (#18 if you want to follow along), she decides she likes her spy partner and wants to ask him out. Which she does by formally presenting him with a nectarine pit necklace and a friendship bracelet made of thorns.

Apparently, according to Samantha, Wonder Woman's being interested in a guy and asking him out is somehow degrading to her. Especially if she considers his feelings and interests and even thinks about doing something that he might want to do. Or, you know, have a frickin' relationship instead of just dictating to the guy How Its Going To Be.

Okay, that's not totally fair to Samantha. It's basically what she said, but I think what I'm really seeing in her post is an over-reaction to a different issue: whether or not Tom "Nemesis" Tressler is a fitting object of Wonder Woman's desire. It's an issue that other people also seem to have. Samantha just unfortunately took her preferences as a fan and tried to make a feminist issue out them: "What's next, is she going to find some bratty kid and decide to spend her life playing Barbies with the kid while she cooks dinner and anxiously waits for Tommy-poo to get home?"

Yeah, because that's the next logical step after "I dunno, what do you want to do?"

I do get the complaints about Tom's not being "worthy," though I'd phrase it in a different way. So far in the series, he's been written as kind of a jerk. A likable jerk in many ways, but still kind of a butthole. And, unfortunately, Wonder Woman's romantic interest in him is kind of coming out of nowhere. She's been portrayed as occasionally amused by him, but more often frustrated. And yeah, that kind of annoyed flirtation often turns to romantic interest in fiction, but the transition is usually a lot smoother.

I guess I would have liked to have seen Wonder Woman seriously considering her feelings about Tom for an issue or two before we jumped to this scene. It wouldn't have had to have been the focus of the whole comic or anything, just something to help bring readers along that this is where Wonder Woman was thinking about going.

I think Tom Tressler is worthy of Wonder Woman if she thinks he is; I'd just like to understand why she thinks he is.
