Music Meme: 1989

Continuing my list of favorite albums from every year I've been alive.

1989

The B-52s: Cosmic Thing

This one was kind of easy; mostly because I was very much the poor college student in 1989 and I think I only bought three albums all year. As much as I like the other two, I can't listen to Cosmic Thing without calling up fond memories of college and some of the girls I used to hang around with. It's inextricably tied to that period of my life.

Runners up:
The Cure: Disintegration
Tears for Fears: The Seeds of Love

Singles:

Depeche Mode: "Personal Jesus"
Duran Duran: "All She Wants Is"
Faith No More: "Epic"
Fine Young Cannibals: "She Drives Me Crazy"
Love and Rockets: "So Alive"
Madonna: "Like a Prayer"
Nine Inch Nails: "Head Like a Hole"
Soul II Soul: "Back to Life"
Tone Lōc: "Funky Cold Medina"
Tone Lōc: "Wild Thing"

Oh the B-52s...I love them so much. This was the same year I started teaching and to be hip and cool I needed a name for our classroom intermural team. It was between the Rock Lobsters and the Fine Young Cannibals. We went with Cannibals and they all thought I was a genius who invented the term. I had to show them the CD which only further increased my street cred. These were rural Alberta farm kids so it wasn't so much of a stretch. Of course Depeche Mode was too much of a leap for them. Maybe it had something to do with me telling them to "reach out and touch faith." all the time and not meaning religion because Big Daddy don't spread the man's propoganda for nobody. Proud that the church still has their assassins out to get ne for supporting the 'Like a Prayer' video and its Black Jesus. Reach out and touch that homeboy!
