Mark Waid explains Captain Marvel

Popgun Chao$! has a great interview with Mark Waid about Captain Marvel. Specifically, what makes him attractive, what differentiates him from other superheroes, why he's such a difficult character to build a series around, and why he doesn't have to be. To no surprise, Waid absolutely nails it.

He's also inspired me to check out not only Chip Kidd's new Shazam! book, but also DC's Shazam! Archives.

Cap's my favorite hero. I haven't got the new collection yet, but I've got the 4 Shazam archives, plus the 1 Shazam Family archives. I think they're out of print now, since all the copies I see on Amazon and Ebay are used, and kind of pricey.

Man, I really loved Jeff Smith's Shazam!: The Monster Society of Evil. And that's coming from a guy who had never given Captain Marvel a second's thought. That book was fun to the max!

I loved Jeff Smith's take too. And I just watched the "Siege of Starro" episodes of Batman: The Brave and the Bold, another story that gets Capt. Marvel.

It really shouldn't be that hard.

Great interview. I loved that it focused a lot on 'Kingdom Come'. I hate to admit this but the first time I read that story, I had NO IDEA that Captain Marvel would show up until that last page of issue number three. I just didn't put two and two together but that is probably what makes the story so great in the first place. It rewards you in so many ways. I agree that Captain Marvel should be geered towards the Marvel Super Squad audience. I would have totally carried around a suit wearing stuffed tiger as a kid. He would be HUGE with the pre-school set. I always thought it would be cool to dress two boys who were about five years apart as Billy and CM for Halloween. Though the littlest brother would have some serious issues with that upon becoming an adult.
