Finally got around to seeing this one now that it's become a cult classic and a nostalgia beacon for people my age.

What did you think?

It's probably my second-favorite Tim Burton movie after Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

Honestly I thought it was rather clumsily made. I didn't mind the changes they made to the source material by making it into more of a hammer horror film grafted onto a scooby do mystery, but I just couldn't get behind this version of Icabod Crane.

We're supposed to sympathize with because he's ahead of his time with forensic science but we there's too much of him pulling out tools and then just cutting away without showing us this brilliant Sherlock Holmes style investigator that he's supposed to be. He's far too cowardly the rest of the time to buy him as a police officer and the "my mother was a witch" feels like something tacked on just to perplex the audience with something that didn't recognize a mile away.

Personally, I loved the different take on Ichabod and hearing that Depp was basically playing him as a young girl. I think his Ichabod imagined himself to be more like Holmes than he actually was, and that's part of the fun for me. But I can understand why it wouldn't work for everyone and I do agree that the witch-mother backstory wasn't necessary.
