They do have professionals in the organization too though. Bryan Singer, for example, serves on their "Direction Committee." According to the website, nominations are developed by committees made up (as much as possible) of equal parts professionals, academics, and fans.
The nominations -- divided up across a surprisingly large number of categories -- are an interesting review of genre films and TV shows and the folks who make them last year, so check them out and pick your favorites. Winners will be announced at the Academy's award ceremony on May 2nd.

..Michale again shows his midwestern life. :) The Academy is a pretty good sized fish. I would think they passed the fan status years ago ... but what do I know... it's primarily because they did a lot of work to get those films recognized. Raimi was a long time supporter. I can remember seeing him at screenings a lot when I was young. At one of their screenings I also met Vincent Price briefly. They run a professional system ... so I always thought of 'em as professional...
Oddly enough, my uncle produced several of the Saturn awards shows in the mid-80s into the early-90s. They were fun... :)
I figured that since all you have to do to get a vote is to pay annual dues, that make's them mainly a fan-award, but maybe I didn't understand how it works.
The uniform, pro-academic-fan mix certainly elevates them above something like the People's Choice or Wizard Fan Awards.
That's cool that you have a connection to them. :)

Thank goodness I am going on vacation!
You do need a vacation. I know a lovely place in Minnesota. Cheap, too!

...but do they have jobs too? We had planned to go to Lake Tahoe for about six months. My wife talked me into not cancelling ... I really wasn't much in the mood at first.
But, hey, an 8 hour drive with Katie in the car will cure you of that! Yikes!!!!
