When Drive-Ins Attack!: Midnight Special

I decided not to stick this in the "Elsewhere" post because it's not really my work, but if you'd like to see another story from Dread Central's presentation of When Drive-Ins Attack!, they've got a new one up by Jason Pell and Ardian Syaf called "Midnight Special." And it actually features a drive-in.

When Drive-Ins Attack! Free!

This is pretty cool. Just in time for Halloween, horror website Dread Central is serializing When Drive-Ins Attack, the grindhouse-inspired anthology mini-series that I contributed to. They've started with Dan Wickline and Jason Jarava's werewolf/war story "Cry Havoc."

Not sure when they'll get to my and Earl Geier's about the jungle women and the treasure hunters and the really huge gorilla, but I'll let you know when it's up. Or you could always bookmark this page and keep up with all the updates.

BUY MY STUFF: Amazon Women and the Nazi Gold

Hey! My jungle girl story is out! Woo HOO!

When Drive-Ins Attack is a four-issue, full-color, anthology mini-series inspired by drive-ins and grindhouse movies. All four issues are available right now from IndyPlanet.

My story with Earl Geier - "Amazon Women and the Nazi Gold" - is in the first issue along with Dwight Macpherson and Valerio Giangiordano's "They Came from Outer Space." Because of the grindhouse homage, it's not one for the kids. In fact, the only strict direction editor Rich Stahnke gave us was that we had to include the Four Bs: Bullets, Blood, Beasts, and Boobs. I like to think that Earl and I were fairly tasteful about how to work all that in, but we certainly did get it all in, so keep that in mind if you think you might be offended by any of that. The language, while easily PG-rated, is also not kid-friendly.

I haven't actually seen all the art from my story yet, but here's what's on IndyPlanet's preview page:

It probably won't be available in most stores. I can't image Diamond Distribution taking a chance on a book like this in today's climate. I'm sure I can get some into Twin Cities shops and I'll have some at WizardWorld Chicago and FallCon. The best way to get a copy right now though will be through the IndyPlanet site. While you're there, take a look at the other three issues too. There are werewolves, prehistoric man-eating birds, gunfighters, and at least one page of gorillas wearing diving helmets.

Update: Amazon Women and the Nazi Gold

You may remember that I've contributed a jungle girl story called "Amazon Women and the Nazi Gold" to an anthology called When Drive-Ins Attack!. Jess Hickman was originally going to do the art for it, but she had to bow out in order to concentrate on Oddly Normal. I was sorry not to get to work with Jess on it, but fortunately we found a talented artist named Earl Geier to work with.

Anyway, Drive-Ins editor Rich Stahnke says on his blog that all the art for the book is complete and it's currently being lettered. Rich produces comics under the Tin Star Studios label, but he's actually going to ship this book around to some publishers. Keeping my fingers crossed that it gets picked up. I haven't seen the completed art on it yet, but I'm pretty proud of the script I turned in.

In lieu of jungle art from "Amazon Women" though, how about a cover from Detective Comics showing the Batmobile getting clobbered by a jungle-man riding a rhino?

I thought that might be okay too. (Thanks to Golden Age Comic Book Stories for the image.)

Awesome Stuff: Shark-Man, Hobbit rumors, When Drive-Ins Attack, Lost Season 4, Crime Wave, and the Hulk movie

Shark-Man

Shark-Man #1 comes out tomorrow and I'm really excited about it. I may have mentioned it before. That's the cover for #3 above. Man, I hope the insides are as cool as those covers.

Hobbit Movie Rumors

I try not to speculate on rumors too much, but there's so much going around about the Hobbit movie that I feel like I should at least mention it. Reports are coming in about how Peter Jackson may be producing, but he's definitely not directing, so the speculation is that Sam Raimi will be. And apparently everyone thinks that they're not dividing the story into two movies, but one will be The Hobbit and the other will span the 60 years between The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Heidi does a great job of not only collecting the rumors, but analyzing them as well.

When Drive-Ins Attack!

ComicMonsters.com has an interview with When Drive-Ins Attack! editor Rich Stahnke. If you don't remember, Jess Hickman and I are contributing a story to that anthology, and the interview includes an illustration of a familiar-looking jungle girl.

Lost Season 4

Crime Wave

The History Channel is running a documentary starting this Sunday called Crime Wave: 18 Months of Mayhem. It's about a spree of robberies, killings, and kidnappings perpetrated by the likes of John Dillinger, Machine Gun Kelly, Baby Face Nelson, and Bonnie and Clyde during an 18-month period from 1933 to 1934.

The Incredible Hulk

Stills have been released from the Incredible Hulk movie and they look great. The Hulk looks awesome and damn if that machine Banner's in doesn't look like an homage to the one in the TV show.

Mighty SweatCon

Dang. It's hard to keep my head above water this week. Sorry about the lack of a post yesterday, too.

I'm going to let the pictures do the talking for most of this report, but what they don't show you is that it was unbelievably hot last weekend for Minnesota in October. Jason Copland stepped off the plane from Vancouver into high 80s temps and what felt like 99% humidity and it didn't let up until he got back on the plane Monday morning. Naturally, I'm blaming him.

FallCon is held in a large, old building at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. Early October is usually the perfect time for that kind of venue. It's chilly, but with a light jacket and all the body heat generated by convention attendees, it's usually completely comfortable. Not this year though.

Fellow FallCon guest Rich Koslowski captured the experience perfectly in the sketch above.

Jason and I shared a table all weekend. The convention was well attended Saturday morning and we started out okay, but by noon most of the congoers had abandoned us for other places. Presumably, other places with air conditioning. We didn't end up selling much, but that would've been different had we had copies of Kill All Monsters! there. Even with the small crowd, we had a ton of interest in the book. Everyone who looked at our sample pages declared their love for the concept and Jason's art.

I also handed out a ton of "Amazon Women" previews. And speaking of that project, artist Jess Hickman went around getting people to pose like Dr. Evil for her.

There were more people in costume this year than usually show up for FallCon. It's typically a rather subdued show, but there were a whole mess of folks dressed up like Star Wars and Star Trek characters, as well as DC heroes. Green Arrow and Black Canary showed up on Saturday. (Thanks to Jess for this picture.)

Green Arrow showed up again on Sunday, only with Wonder Woman this time. That playah. (This is them checking out Jess' table.)

My wife and son showed up late on Saturday to visit. David was appropriately dressed.

That's his Halloween costume this year. He picked it out himself and while I don't know why he went with the black costume, I'm a proud dad.

FallCon goodies

Not much longer now. Jason Copland gets into town in a couple of hours and tomorrow we'll be setting up at FallCon 2007. Here are a couple of goodies we'll be giving away at our table:

Limited edition Kill All Monsters! print signed by Jason and me.

And an ashcan preview book that Jess Hickman and I put together for "Amazon Women and the Nazi Gold."

If you're anywhere near the Twin Cities, come on down to the Fairgrounds and say, "Gimme some free stuff!"

FallCon 2007

How about another concept sketch from "Amazon Women and the Nazi Gold?" This is Tok, one of the characters from Jess Hickman and my contribution to When Drive-Ins Attack!.

Jess and I will both be at FallCon this weekend and we'll have some sort of "Amazon Women" sketchbook thingy there to hand out, so stop by either one of our tables. I haven't seen the layout yet, but we're usually right close to each other.

Jason Copland will also be making a rare convention appearance at FallCon. You'll be able to find him with me next to the huge Kill All Monsters! poster.

Dang. I've got a sketchbook and a poster to get ready before the weekend. I'd better get crackin'!

When Drive-Ins Attack!

I mentioned that Jess Hickman and I are working on a short, jungle girl story for an anthology, right? And that I'd let you know more about it when I could? Well, how about the title?

It's called When Drive-Ins Attack! and, as the name suggests, it's an anthology of stories inspired by drive-ins and grindhouse movies. I just saw a list of the creators signed up so far and since I probably shouldn't say anything definitive about them just yet, I'll just say that I was pleasantly surprised at some of the names I saw. As if working with Jess again isn't enough, I'm in some really nice company on this one.

But speaking of Jess, how about some more character sketches from our story, Amazon Women and the Nazi Gold:

Man, I love Jess' pencils. I've always wondered how they'd look inked though.

Turns out, really damn good.
