Mark Waid explains Captain Marvel
Popgun Chao$! has a great interview with Mark Waid about Captain Marvel. Specifically, what makes him attractive, what differentiates him from other superheroes, why he's such a difficult character to build a series around, and why he doesn't have to be. To no surprise, Waid absolutely nails it.
He's also inspired me to check out not only Chip Kidd's new Shazam! book, but also DC's Shazam! Archives.

Kill All Monsters!: The Blog
Remember to bookmark the Kill All Monsters! blog if you like your giant robots and monsters. It's much more than updates about the webcomic. This week, for instance, I reviewed Skyline and linked to a couple of great, giant monster strips by David DeGrand and Katie Cook.
Blood Song
In this weeks What Are You Reading? column at Robot 6, I talked briefly about Eric Drooker's lovely and heart-breaking Blood Song.
Food or Comics?
If I only had $15 to spend on comics this week, it would go to Alpha Flight and Salimba, Paul Chadwick's comic about a pirate-fighting jungle girl. Hit that link to find out what I'd get with more money than that.
What Looks Good for January
This week's Gorillas Riding Dinosaurs was a look at the cool, new adventure comics coming out in January. Lots of space pulp and Sherlock Holmes, among other awesome things.

Check out Old Sinner
I don't have a real post tonight. Instead I've finally updated my Christmas Carol blog. I still haven't hit on a workable, regular schedule for that, but I'm going to try occasionally skipping a day here to free up time for Dickens. It won't be every week or anything, so I hope that's okay.

One of My Most Prized Possessions
I had some trouble with this item from Calvin's List. Hopefully this won't make me sound self-righteous, but I don't have a lot of possessions that I prize. I use my laptop all the time and would hate if anything happened to it, but that's more about the data than the device. I have lots of little knickknacks in my office that I like, but nothing that I'd run into a fire to save. Even the comics are replaceable.
The only thing I'd really miss if it was gone is our house. Mostly for the memories (David's spent his whole life there), but also because we've put some work into it and it's a pretty cool house.

Writing is Hard: Character Actors
John Rozum has a cool post on "casting" his characters in his head before he writes them. Referring specifically to Adam and Julia Kadmon from Midnight, Mass. he talks about how imagining a specific actor in the role can not only help communicate ideas to comic book artists, but can also help solidify the character in your head as you're writing:
When I got to thinking about Midnight, Mass. again shortly before it finally became a reality I had an epiphany of Julia being Famke Janssen which really brought together all of the loose threads and ideas I had for the series and definitely cemented the character of Julia for me.I've done this a couple of times and it was very helpful. I need to do it more.
Elsewhere... I got dapper
Food or Comics
In this week's comics-on-a-budget column, I picked Hellboy: Double-Feature of Evil, Return of the Dapper Men, and The Littlest Pirate King, among others.
Gorillas Riding Dinosaurs
Image boosted from Kelly Sue's old Team in Training page.
I interviewed Kelly Sue DeConnick in the first of hopefully many profiles of my favorite comics storytellers.

Quotes of the Week: The Morning Paper
Image bogarted from i09.
I adore the idea of thoughtful newspaper readers at various genteel locations around the country getting the local softball tournament scores, seeing how much the next royal wedding will cost, checking the daily lottery numbers, taking in the latest episode of Pluggers, reading the minutes of the local school board meeting and learning all about tentacle porn.

Dear Monsters...
Just a reminder that the Killing of All Monsters commences tomorrow.
Also, David was sick last night and I wasn't able to post this, but the second half of our interview with Ian Explosivo went up yesterday. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to discuss Taco Salad, but we did get to talk about why Jason and I decided to make Kill All Monsters! into a webcomic and how that format has affected the way we're telling the story.

Pass the Comics: Junglebots Attack!
Princess Pantha tries to capture The Great M'Gana
Everyone's kind of a jerk in this story. Princess Pantha's a big game hunter trying to capture a giant gorilla for the circus and her boyfriend's a chauvinistic butthole. The most likable character is the villain, a scientist who also wants to capture the ape, but for study, not exhibition. The less said about the portrayal of the native, the better. [The Comic Book Catacombs]
Zago, Jungle Prince vs. The Iron Army
And, yes, by "Iron Army," they mean robots. Very cool. [The Comic Book Catacombs]

Kill All Monsters! Interview
Speaking of Ian, he interviewed Jason and I for Review2aKill and the first half of the conversation was posted today. We talked about how Jason and I met and the origin of the comic. Tomorrow: I share my recipe for Taco Salad (or we talk more about giant monsters; you'll have to tune in to find out).
New Banners: Thanks, Ian!
I got a cool, unexpected email last night from Review2AKill's Ian Explosivo. He'd noticed that I've been playing with banners and rotating through some, so he made a few himself and wanted to see if I'd like to use them.
They're WAY cooler than any I've done. I mean just look at the font and that gun for the L in the one above. The other two are awesome too, but I'm going to rotate through these a bit more slowly than I've been doing. I want to look at each of them longer.
Thanks, Ian!
[If anyone else wants to play with an Adventureblog banner and send it in, I'll be happy to run it too. I can't pay anything, but I'll be sure to mention you when I use it. The size should be 800 x 150.]
