Elsewhere... Mad scientists pose as vampires

Flick Attack!

Flick Attack is a new blog by the folks behind Bookgasm, the awesome book review blog. They can explain what Flick Attack's about much better than I can:
We’ll have no news. No scoops. No rumors. No set reports. Just one kick-ass review a day, Monday through Friday, with the occasional article on Saturday to make your weekend that much awesomer.

Yep, that’s right: Every day you get one review, so take it or leave it. While everyone else pees their pants over the latest multiplex releases, we’re gonna dig through our archives and toss out something that’s not playing a theater near you. Maybe you’ve heard of it; maybe you haven’t; maybe it’s easy to find; maybe it’s not — doesn’t matter. You will read it, and you will like it.

So if you like discovering cinematic trash-terpieces, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve got horror, sci-fi, action, kung fu, comedy and sex. But no drama. If it’s tears you want, we’ll be happy to kick you in the shin.
And they're letting me play with them. My first review - for the Bela Lugosi masterpiece (and possible origin of vampires' saying "Bleh!") My Son the Vampire - went up last Monday.

Food or Comics?

This week's comics on a budget column included Beasts of Burden/Hellboy and Sky Pirates of Valendor amongst other things.

Boneyard

Finally, this week's Gorillas Riding Dinosaurs was a look at Richard Moore's Boneyard.

Last weekend's Five for Friday assignment was to Name Five Comics You've Re-Read This Year. Mine were:

1. Artesia
2. The Killer
3. Atomic Robo and the Fightin' Scientists of Tesladyne
4. Okko: The Cycle of Water
5. Boneyard

Food or Comics?

For this week's "comics on a budget" column, I picked Dragon Puncher, Marvel Her-Oes, Zorro: Matanzas, and (with reservations) the DCU Halloween Special.

What Looks Good for December

This week's Gorillas Riding Dinosaurs was a look at cool, new adventure comics coming out in December. Lots of Sherlock Holmes and dinosaurs, but also pirates, Dracula, Sinbad, and talking primates.

Elsewhere... More Horror Comics

Still focused on the Halloween stuff even outside of this blog...

Custom Jump 2: American Edition

Last weekend's Five for Friday assignment was to Name Five Existing (Completed Or Ongoing) American Comics Serials (Or Books That Could Be Made Into Serials) That You Would Put In A Japanese-Style, Big Ol' Phonebook-Sized Anthology Of American Comics, Made Just For You.

Unfortunately, I'd completely forgotten about the "American" part of the description by the time I got to my fifth item, but Spurgeon was nice enough not to disqualify me.

1. Bone
2. Pogo
3. Boneyard
4. Casper
5. Buddha

What Are You Reading?

Quick reviews of Charles Burns' Black Hole and the first couple of volumes of Richard Moore's Boneyard.

Food or Comics

This week's Comics on a Budget picks included Knight & Squire, Tiny Titans/Little ArchieStrange Tales 2, Warlord of MarsTurok: Son of Stone, Campfire’s adaptation of The Invisible Man, Bloom County Complete Library, Volume 3, and Dick Briefer’s Frankenstein.

Big Book of Horror

Gorillas Riding Dinosaurs was a review of Steve Niles' adaptations of Frankenstein, War of the Worlds, and Dracula for kids.

31 Things I Love About Halloween: Horror Comics

In addition to movie marathons, my comics tastes turn exclusively to horror in October. Rather than revisiting old favorites though, I'm usually catching up on stuff I've never read before.

Right now I'm reading Charles Burns' Black Hole (it's as good and disturbing as everyone says it is) and my Amazon shipment should arrive tomorrow with the volumes I lack from Richard Moore's graveyard smash, Boneyard. That'll probably carry me to the end of the month, but if there's time, I'll catch up some on BPRD. I tend to like monsters and spooky/creepy stories rather than gory shock/splatter stuff.

What horror comics are you reading? What would you recommend for me to add to my stack?

Comics News: Dino Fighting and Dragon Punching

Heralds

Marvel certainly is serious about spotlighting their female heroes this year. Heralds is a mini-series coming in June about She-Hulk, Valkyrie, and others fighting a former herald of Galactus. And apparently some zombies and dinosaurs. [Robot 6]

Dragon Puncher

I said in this morning's Gorillas Riding Dinosaurs column that Frenemy of the State was probably the best title anything would get all year. I'd clearly forgotten about Dragon Puncher about "a cute but ruthless kitty in an armored battle suit, dedicated to defeating dangerous dragons wherever they may be. The Dragon Puncher and his would-be sidekick Spoony-E (a fuzzy little fellow armed with a wooden spoon) confront a gigantic, drooling dragon and have a ridiculous, hilarious brawl." Coming from Top Shelf in July. [Robot 6]

Boneyard, The Good Neighbors, and Mouse Guard after the break.
