Happy ERBday!

Painting by Daryl Mandryk [via]

Today would have been Edgar Rice Burroughs' 139th birthday, so Happy ERBday, everyone!

The last couple of weeks have been crazy, so I didn't have a lot of time for reading or posting, but the Bondathon will resume as soon as I finish On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Back into the groove now, so hopefully not too much longer.

While it still is... Happy Edgar Rice Burroughs Day!

It's been a busy weekend and I almost didn't get to this, but this year of all years I shouldn't miss honoring Edgar Rice Burroughs on his birthday. He would've been 138 today.

Gree-ah!

That time Jack Kirby drew Tarzan playing a board game with jungle animals

Happy Kirby Day! The King would have been 96 today. He's not usually associated with Tarzan, but I love the art he did for this game found by Jon's Random Acts of Geekery.

Birthdays are jungle days

My birthday was last week and a couple of dear friends helped me celebrate with these awesome sketches. The one on top is by Jess Hickman and the bottom one is by Uko Smith. Obviously, they know what I like.

Happy Oz Day!

Today was L. Frank Baum's birthday in 1856. My son is celebrating in the best possible way.

Happy Birthday to me, part two (or, Comics are awesome and I love my friends)

Ben Zmith draws the hilarious and awesome Rooster Jack comics. Turns out, he also draws an amazing birthday card featuring my favorite chicken-handed fantasy hero. Thanks again, Ben!

I'm seriously humbled and awed by all the love I've gotten today: here on the blog, through Facebook and Twitter, on the phone, and in person. Thanks to everyone for a fantastic birthday.

Happy Birthday to me

I know it's weird to wish myself a Happy Birthday, but I really just want to show off this awesome drawing my even more awesome friend Jessica Hickman made for me. Thank you, Jess!

Happy Robert Louis Stevenson Day!

Robert Louis Stevenson would've been 160 today. Google even made a special logo for the occasion. Since it's probably a bit late to start planning your celebration, just interject a few good "Arrrs" into conversation wherever you are tonight.

Either that or drink a strange concoction and get wild.

Happy Daniel Boone Day

Daniel Boone was born on this day in 1734. Though he actually preferred beaver-skin caps to raccoon and would be 276, if he was alive today he'd still be the rippinest, roarinest, fightinest man the frontier ever knew.

Incidentally, cheerleading was also invented this day in 1898 at the University of Minnesota. See how cool Minnesota is?

Because it's my Birthday and I wants it, Precious

I'm taking the day off to eat cake and open presents. See you tomorrow (when I'll have lots of catching up to do)!

Happy Birthday, David!

Today's my son's eighth birthday, so in honor of him I'm going to kick off this week's art show with two items that he'll especially enjoy.

David's Favorite Superhero Comics Character

By Craig Rousseau.

Tarzan fighting a triceratops ... under water!

By George Wilson. [Gold Key Comics!]

Happy Birthday, Buddy!

For the rest of you guys, I'll get the rest of the art show up in a bit.

Happy Birthday, Robot 6!

Robot 6 turned one year old this weekend. And we got a couple of very cool birthday cards!

By Guy Davis and Dave Stewart! Davis is one of my favorite artists of any medium, so I'm still pinching myself over this. Stewart is a legendary colorist, so that makes it even more unreal.

This one's by Mohammad F ("Hawk") Haque (Applegeeks), who's work I didn't know before, but plan to spend more time with from now on. That piece is so gorgeous and charming.

Thanks so much, Guy, Dave, and Hawk!

Also, it was a blast working with the other Robot 6 members last year and I'm looking forward to doing it all over again this year. Happy Birthday, guys!

Happy Rob Roy Day!

Today's Sir Walter Scott's birthday. He was born in 1771.

In lieu of a big helping of haggis, I'm celebrating by trying not to weave any tangled webs today.

Happy Dumas Day!

Alexandre Dumas was born today in 1802. His love of history, adventure, swordfights, and romance have not only rubbed off on me; they've also made him one of my favorite authors of all time.

Happy Phantom of the Opera Day!

Today's the birthday of Phantom of the Opera author Gaston Leroux, born in 1868.

If all you know about the Opera Ghost is the cheesy musical... well, you're probably not reading this blog I guess. But seriously, if you've never read Leroux's novel, do yourself a favor and pick it up. It's even better than the Lon Chaney movie. And I love the Lon Chaney movie.
