C2E2's Pulp Fiction Panel

This week's Gorillas Riding Dinosaurs was about C2E2's panel on the resurgence of Pulp, not only in comics, but in popular culture at large. It was a cool discussion that covered the merits of old Pulp vs the new stuff, how to make modern Pulp feel like classic Pulp, and the endurance of the genre in general.

Speaking of C2E2, I've finally got all my photos uploaded to Flickr if you want to see more.

Elsewhere on the Internets: How Do Dinosaurs Comment on Reviews?

Here's what else I've been up to online lately.

Gorillas Riding Dinosaurs

I've posted a couple of columns since the last of these Elsewhere... updates. One was on cool, new adventure comics coming in May. Highlights include Cavemen in Space, a new Mouse Guard series, jungle men, Hellboy vs a vampire luchador and an evil turkey, the returns of some really great superheroes, the third season of Jericho, a couple of secret societies, Dracula, Frankenstein, Frenemy of the State, and that rarest of creatures: a truly original take on zombies.

The other GRD column - from a couple of days ago - was on Jane Yolen's Foiled. I approached it the only way I could - as someone relatively unfamiliar with Yolen's work - and enjoyed it, but not as much as I could have. Be sure to check out the comments on this one. Not only do Yolen fans very politely check in, but Yolen herself makes an appearance to respond.

Plump Sister

We finally start the section on Scrooge's nephew and I change my approach to talking about Dickens' original text.

Elsewhere on the Internets: Best of the Bronze Age

Here's what else I've been up to online lately:

Five for Friday

Last Friday's (not yesterday, but the week before) assignment from Tom Spurgeon was to Name Five Comics Or Cohesive Runs Of Comics That You Would Give To Someone That Would Encapsulate The Bronze Age And Provide A Gateway To Its Greater Pleasures.

My very Marvel/DC-centric answers were:

1. X-Men #94-143 (1975-1981)
2. Batman #232-244 (1971-1972)
3. Special Marvel Edition #15-16 (1973-1974)
4. Green Lantern #76-89 (1970-1972)
5. Tomb of Dracula #1-70 (1972-1979)

Plump Sister

We finally wrapped up the first scene of A Christmas Carol with a look at a couple of comics adaptations: Marvel's Bronze Age one and Classical Comics' more recent graphic novel version.

Gorillas Riding Dinosaurs

My first column in the new time slot finished the series I've been doing on Anne Freaks.

Another nice compliment

Fehed Said said something nice about my review of his Talking to Strangers anthology. He called it "a very thoughtful review" and added, "Truth be told, I wasn’t expecting anything less from Michael May." Thanks so much, Fehed. Such a thoughtful book deserved no less.

Gorillas Riding Dinosaurs is Migrating

If you're used to reading my Gorillas Riding Dinosaurs column at Robot 6 on Wednesdays (or Thursdays, Fridays, or Saturdays, for that matter), don't be alarmed when you don't see it this week. It's moving to Sundays.

That's actually a really cool thing, both for my writing schedule and for the column itself. We originally tried to keep columns off the weekends, thinking that most people weren't reading then, but that hasn't been the case and the weekends have turned out to be pretty high in traffic. To beef up that part of the week (and relieve some congestion on the weekdays), GRD and Brigid Alverson's webcomic column, Unbound, are making the switch.

Related to that, I was trying to think of something cool to illustrate this post with and realized how nice it would be if there was more art in the world depicting gorillas riding dinosaurs. I think I've found the theme for my next convention sketchbook.
