Gravedigger: Hot Women, Cold Cash



Christopher Mills has a preview up from his and Rick Burchett's next Gravedigger comic. It was Gravedigger that first turned me on to Chris' stuff, so I'm especially excited to see this sequel. It's excellent noir.

The Azzarelloverse



When I first heard about DC's plans to start a new line of comics with old pulp heroes like Doc Savage, I wasn't as excited as I thought I should be. I don't know a lot about Doc Savage or the Blackhawks, the Spirit's already got his own ongoing that I'm not reading, and Rima's never been my favorite jungle girl.

But hearing more about it at Chicago Comic-Con has got me plenty pumped for it. I figured it was going to be in its own small corner of the existing DC Universe, but I love the idea that instead it's part of a separate reality in which no superpowers exist. So you can have Batman and the Black Canary (without her sonic scream) running around, but no Superman or Green Lantern. Knowing that crime-writer Brian Azzarello is playing a large part in its development helps a lot too. It should be a much tougher style of costumed crime-fighting with more focus on detective work and brawling. Looking forward to it.

Quotes of the Week: Ragging on the Spirit

It's totally cliché to rag on Frank Miller's Spirit movie anymore, but I can't help it if all the best lines this week came from Spirit reviews.

There is not a trace of human emotion in it. To call the characters cardboard is to insult a useful packing material.

...it doesn't seem to matter if people have read the comics or not. If you get what makes the character work, if you get what people like about it in its platonic ideal, you have a successful movie -- Iron Man being a lovely case in point.

Which, I suspect, is why Sin City and 300 worked. They were like having the comics happening up on the screen. The thing that people liked about it was there. With The Spirit, what the reader responded to is Eisner's lightness of touch and mastery of story, his humour and his humanity -- and a world that looks like Eisner drew it. The moment that it's obvious that that isn't there it almost doesn't matter what is there instead. According to Gaiman's Law, the more Sin City looked and felt like what people like about Frank Miller's work on Sin City, the more successful it was going to be with audiences, but the more The Spirit feels like Sin City and not like Will Eisner's The Spirit, the less successful it's going to be.

In comics, it took Miller decades to devolve into embarrassing self-parody. In film, he's made that leap over the course of a single disastrous film.

Another Blue Beetle interview

I followed up my interview with the writer of Blue Beetle's all-Spanish issue by breaking the news about the series' new, regular writer: Jack of Fables' Matt Sturges. Hopefully you can't tell it from the interviews, but I've never read an issue of Blue Beetle before now. These conversations have made me want to change that though, so I'll be picking up the Spanish issue this week as well as checking out Matt's run. And I just bought the collection of the first six issues in the series.

Atlantis Rising

I don't read Platinum Comics because the vibe I get is that they're all movie pitches first and comics second. I'd rather read comics by people who just really want to make comics.

That's not to say that there aren't some nifty movie ideas in their concepts though, so I'm actually curious to see more about the Atlantis Rising movie. I loves me some Atlantis stories.

Black Panther: The Animated Series

I got tired of the Black Panther comic once it got caught up in Civil War and became a second Fantastic Four title, but if the cartoon is anything like the early issues, I'll be all over it.

Three Days in Europe movie

Back when I was actively trying to expand my tastes with some genres I don't typically read, I thought I'd give Three Days in Europe a try thinking it was a Romance comic. It was, but it was also a crime/spy/adventure comic and it was really good. So I'm happy that it's getting made into a movie starring Hugh Jackman and Jennifer Garner.

I like this one. It looks more like a Will Eisner splash page and less like Sin City 2. I'd prefer it not be in black-and-white though.

New X-Files comics

I never used to read X-Files comics when the show was still on even though one of my favorite writers, John Rozum, was writing them. Comics based on currently-being-produced TV shows are always creatively tied by the need to not contradict the show they're based on. That might not be as big a problem now that X-Files is an infrequent movie series though, so I'm likely to give this a shot.

Fans have been clamoring for a more kid-friendly (or, more specifically, young-girl-friendly) Supergirl comic for a while now. Looks like they're finally getting it.
