Ragnarok seems to be Thor's answer to The Winter Soldier, a movie that strips away the most recognized surface elements associated with Thor so that the heart of the character shines through. While I would have liked to have seen Thor come into his own and recognized by the public more than just being a third-tier guy in the Avengers movies, I don't think you could have had this kind Flash Gordon style madcap roadtrip with a surprisingly witty Thor any earlier than this.
Taika Waiti was also a member of the Oceanic Story Trust that wrote the first draft of Moana. I'm sure its no coincidence that both films involve a people who have lost touch with their roots and are threatened by a decay/death villain.
The fight between Hulk and Thor almost feels like an antidote to tone of Civil War. Thor doesn't want to fight Hulk and wants to be friends. Even when he's frustrated with the monster, he doesn't give up on him, and I hope to see the seeds of this newfound respect come to fruition in "Endgame".
I think you're right about the length. I've been trying to make these shorter anyway by keeping the discussion at a high level (mostly because doing them weekly is wearing me out), but relistening to this one, David is indeed super engaged, which means that I don't have to ramble. :)
