Dragonfly Ripple | Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

David and I hash out how Homecoming compares to the Sam Raimi and Marc Webb Spider-Man films.

Thanks for the shout out! It's good to know I'm not the only one who thought of Tobey Maquire for the Uncle Ben role.

I love the Sam Raimi Spider-Man. It came out when I was 12 and I've probably seen in the theater more than any other movie! Even picking on it is something I do with love. Tobey Maquire looks like he stepped out of John Romita drawing with his round face but the script frames him in a morose lite so he doesn't have much apparent charm. Andrew Garfield was so confident to the point of arrogance that I disliked him greatly. Between those two being overly moody and the other being over complicated I thinker that helped build greater reception for Tom Holland since he seems to occupy a happy medium.

Because it isn't a "Definitive Spider-Man" movie like the last two series were I am excited were they can take the franchise.

I like that Peter can now confide his identity in others. Having trustworthy growups like Tony and Happy is good for a younger hero but it even healthier that he has a peer aged friend in on the secret who isn't also the love interest.

Growing up with reprints of Silver Age comics I'm used to hearing origin stories be retold frequently but I'll agree that it wasn't nessecary to show the spider bite side of the origin in this film. However I do think we need to show it eventually to appreciate Peters character growth. Otherwise you get the idea that Peters motivation is just to impress Iron Man. Many of the recent Spider Man cartoons have saved the origin for flashbacks that compliment another ongoing story so that seems to be the way to go.

Unfortunately not including that motivation leaves it feeling vacant. Without pulling in a strong direction it just seems like a perfectly adequate Spider-Man. I know I call a lot of movies "just average", but even on the Marvel Universe scale this entry feels lightweight. The stakes feel about on par with the first Ant Man movie.

While I am looking forward to Far From Home I find I more enjoy Tom Holland crossing over with the other heroes in their movies rather than be the star of his own.
