Quotes of the Week: Inspiration up the nose

What we’ve had in superhero comics, and this matches most entertainment, is an increase in complexity. And flat-out, that sort of complexity is what’s demanded by readers of superhero books. They clearly don’t care if a work is mature, or literate, or even good, but Goddamnit if it isn’t complex, if it’s simple or straightforward or (Lord help’em) FUN, then that sucker is going to get cancelled as quickly as humanly possible.
--Christopher Butcher, explaining why the best superhero comics aren't the most successful.

Seriously: Consider that, particularly in the last eight to ten years, The Oprah Winfrey Show has become your one-stop shop for inspiration delivered directly to you via fire hose, knocking you back against the wall as inspiration goes right up your nose, whether you want that much inspiration or not. You will be inspired, and you will like it, and all of us will have feelings and we will talk about them.
--Linda Holmes, pointing out that if you've been annoyed by Oprah up until now, you ain't seen nothing yet.

At the same time, I can also safely say that the entire nation will never again be held captive by the radio shenanigans of Fibber McGee and Molly.
--Tom Spurgeon, on how kids today don't really need to be reading the exact same kinds of comics you liked when you were a kid.

The east side of Broadway now has a great view of Batman battling Two-Face on top of the Underdog balloon.
--Bully, announcing the Thanksgiving Day Parade that should have been. (Man, I got behind on Quotes of the Week, didn't I?)

Tom Hanks in a Speedo. I may not be gay anymore.
--Dorian Wright, on Angels & Demons.
