Hellbent for Letterbox | Johnny Guitar (1954)
Pax and I watch another much-requested Western, Nicholas Ray's gorgeous Johnny Guitar starring Joan Crawford, Ernest Borgnine, John Carradine, and Mercedes McCambridge as an all-time great movie villain.
Sterling Hayden is worth sort of following up on. He plays brooding tough guys very well and can be found in a number of classic film noir; "Asphalt Jungle" and "The Killing" in particular. Plus he is General Ripper in "Doctor Strangelove". He also will pop up in a number of 1950s westerns of which many are essentially "B" films. There is one where he uses a harpoon.
Mercedes McCambridge is a really good supporting actress and seems to bring a lot of power to her roles. Sort of like when you see Ward Bond or Ernest Borgnine in the credits you know you will probably see a good character performance.
That's cool to know about Sterling Hayden. Asphalt Jungle and The Killing have both been on my Noir To Do list for a while now. Will definitely be seeking out more McCambridge, too.
