Sort of a combo of "mountain man" and "Skin Game" perhaps you should look up "The Scalphunters" (1968). Burt Lancaster, Ossie Davis, and Telly Savalas. Directed by Sydney Pollack, who did "Jerimiah Johnson" a few years later.
