Dragonfly Ripple | Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
David and I discuss Marvel's exploration of the space opera genre, the characters that inhabit it, and how it connects to the rest of the Cinematic Universe.
Its fascinating to think how this was less than five years ago and was considered such a risk. I certainly didn't know who these characters were and that trailer with the song from Receiver Dogs was weird, but I think that kind of irreverence is what got people's attention that made it such a hit.
That and we were a year away from new Star Wars so the audience didn't have a chip on their shoulders when it came to space adventure movies.
That song in the trailer was key. I knew the characters, but wasn't enough a fan of them to be excited by that alone. The song is what got my attention and made me expect something fun and different.
