'Casting Off | Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

An epic start to an epic movie series deserves an epic panel to talk about it. On the latest 'Casting Off, David and I are joined by Ron Marz, Liz Twachtman, and Mike Westfall to spring a man from jail, commandeer a ship of the fleet, and sail with a buccaneer crew out of Tortuga. We're completely obsessed with the treasure that is this movie.

This episode got me thinking about how Curse of the Black Pearl may have been made in 2003 but it feels like the last movie of the 1990s.

The aesthetics and pace of turning a period piece into an action movie feels lifted from "Gladiator" (Hans Zimmer's score from both movies sound eerily similar).

Starting with the perspective of the female lead who could be an action hero is not for the time she was born in feels like it was inspired by Rose in Titantic. Though thankfully Elizabeth's instigation into the action comes because of the medallion rather than a man.

The princess and the pauper romance may have been lifted from Titanic as well but with swashbuckling comedy adventure were to pair are reunited thanks to a scene stealing comedy sidekick was likely familiar ground for writers Ted Elliot and Terry Russo after their work on "Aladdin".

I'm impressed by the crew you assembled for this show. You probably have the right idea bringing in people with generally favorable opinions about the series beyond the first movie. While I'm in that group who doesn't care for the sequels I haven't seen them since their initial release but can recall my issues are primarily with the over complicated and convuluted plots so I will look forward to listening to your crews thoughts specially about the characters as we sail forward with this franchise!

The third one is especially complicated, so I get that it's more than a lot of people wanna deal with. So many characters; all with different and conflicting goals and motivations. That's a lot of what I love about it, but I'm curious to see how the rest of the panel responds, too.
