Hellbent for Letterbox | Support Your Local Sheriff! (1969)

On this episode, Pax and I go through some Pony Express mail, share The Plainsman (1936) and Diablo (2015) with each other, and then dig into the Western comedy, Support Your Local Sheriff! starring James Garner, Jack Elam, Bruce Dern, and Harry Morgan. We also cover some of the "sequel," Support Your Local Gunfighter (1971) with a similar tone and starring most of the same cast as different characters.

Glad I could help contribute to the podcast with some mail. It sounds like none of us have any strong feelings or memories beyond "Jane Seymour was in it". I suppose it kind of the way I looked at shows like Hercules or Xena. I'm glad we have shows in this niche genre but it's not something that I'm interested in watching because there are unspoken standards.

If someone told me that Dr Quinn was as funny and as cheesily awesome as Hercules and Xena, I would start my binge-watch today.

Some of the little bits in these movies are probably purposeful homages to older westerns. For example:
1) Stamp over a coin with hole in it and then shooting it to prove you did it the first time is done in "Winchester 73".

2) Person just betting all their money on roulette due to what seems a bit like a compulsion is Steve McQueen's character in "Magnificent Seven".

Garner already had some known comic abilities from stuff such as Maverick and also "The Americanization of Emily". And you can also see him in a much rougher western role in "A Man Called Sledge" (1970).

You'll probably like "Barquero". Warren Oates does a very good turn as a somewhat complex villain.
