You're right, it doesn't make sense that Holmes would make a literal promise like that, but it's funny to think that he and Watson had some kind of argument over updating the franchise and Watson apparently won. We're not supposed to take it literally. It's a gag.Michael Mayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12514945570212261283noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7857882.post-28058831376494772792012-09-03T21:49:59.532-05:002012-09-03T21:49:59.532-05:00I still don't follow the 'you promised'...I still don't follow the 'you promised' remark of Watson. It's a non-sequiter to base that on the external fact of the datedness of the cap: Holmes made no such promise or anything to do with the cap, either in the movie, a previous movie, or in any of the Conan Doyle stories.

It comes out of nowhere.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7857882.post-47531235436822077262011-09-20T07:18:49.825-05:002011-09-20T07:18:49.825-05:00Quite a review! Need to rectify that.

The modern Cumberbatch version is good, but you have to first set your mind to being okay with Holmes and Watson as modern day Brits. Once you do that, you can enjoy it for what it is. And it is pretty well done, I think.Wings1295https://www.blogger.com/profile/08045644215235749353noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7857882.post-31846321170018421902011-09-19T21:14:45.390-05:002011-09-19T21:14:45.390-05:00I remeber the "You Promised" line didn&#...I remeber the "You Promised" line didn't make much sense to me as a kid (a side effect of watching the films out of the order they were released) not realizing that there had been an attempt at sticking to the Victorian setting beforehand.

Coincidentally, I just started and finished watching the Benedict Cumberbacht "Sherlock" series this weekend (Three movie length episodes over three days) I give it a stamp of quality recommendation. They focus on marrying a modern procedural crime drama with Sherlock's deductive prowess with a number of shout outs to classic stories. They balance Sherlock's brillance while playing up his social ineptitude for comedy.

In fact, thats something a number of adaptations have played up recently, Sherlock using his deductive scan to embarrass or blackmail people by addressing their dirty secrets. I don't recall such antics in the Bruce and Rathbone series.Erik Johnson Illustratorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11184274387021011687noreply@blogger.com
