Hellbent for Letterbox | The Legend of the Lone Ranger (1981)

Pax and I talk at length about the financial and critical disaster that was William Fraker's Legend of the Lone Ranger, starring Klinton Spilsbury, Michael Horse, and Christopher Lloyd. But along the way, we also cover other iterations of the masked rider's adventures, including the original radio dramas, the 1938 serial, the Clayton Moore TV show, and a couple of cartoons.

Also in this episode: Pony Express mail featuring two lists of Must See Westerns as compiled by comics writer Chuck Dixon:

What, running a world-wide radio show doesn't count?

Loved the Lone Ranger. The Clayton Moore version was my first cowboy hero at 5 or 6. The only problem was Clayton Moore's inimitable voice. I've seen him as one of the heavies in old sci-fi and gangster movies. They'd have him heavily made up, but as soon as he opened his mouth, my pre-teen self would shout, "Hey, that's the Lone Ranger!"

Fun episode, guys. Keep 'em coming!

From 1964, waaaaay before your time. Thought you might enjoy it. BTW, did you know that the Lone Ranger's last name is Reid, and Britt Reid, the Green Hornet, is portrayed as a descendant of his nephew? Anyway...

My dad had all those early Bill Cosby albums and we played them constantly growing up. Thinking about it, that was probably my actual introduction to the character. :)

I'd heard that about Green Hornet. That's very cool. Sort of a legacy hero.
