My Favorite Song: Bridge Over Troubled Water

Let me begin by saying that my answer this week is totally bogus. If we were having an actual conversation about favorite songs, I'd tell you that I'm very happy not to have to pick a favorite. And then I'd spend as much time as you cared to talking about the wide variety of songs that we both liked and how different songs hit you just right at different times of your life or even just at different times of the day.

But, since I have to pick one, Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" will do nicely. It's been a favorite of mine for decades thanks to its stirring production and the simple encouragement of its lyrics. It's moving on a couple of levels. It makes me think about those who have my back, but also challenges me to have the backs of others. Fortunately, I don't often find myself in need of a friend like Paul Simon (who wrote the song) describes, but I do often wish that I could better be that friend.

When you're weary
Feeling small
When tears are in your eyes
I will dry them all

I'm on your side
When times get rough
And friends just can't be found
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

When you're down and out
When you're on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you

I'll take your part
When darkness comes
And pain is all around
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

Sail on, Silver Girl*
Sail on by
Your time has come to shine
All your dreams are on their way

See how they shine
If you need a friend
I'm sailing right behind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind

*Contrary to popular belief, "Silver Girl" isn't a reference to a heroine needle. It was Paul Simon's teasing nickname for his then-girlfriend (later his wife) who freaked out when she found some gray hairs.
